ROYAL FREEMASONS IS COLLABORATING WITH ROOFTOP HONEY – AN ORGANISATION THAT RE-HOMES SWARMS OF BEES ON UNUSED ROOFS, BALCONIES AND GARDENS – IN A PROGRAM THAT REFLECTS OUR ONGOING COMMITMENT TO ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY.
Working with managers and residents to ensure that all parties understood the program and were happy to be involved. The new venture is proving positive with residents and employees. “When Royal Freemasons first suggested that a beehive was considered for Berwick Brae Retirement Village, the residents were unanimous that they wanted to be involved to make a difference in sustainability for our environment,” one manager said. Berwick Brae residents were excited not only for their village but also for the 38 hectare botanical gardens behind the site that have an abundance of flora for the bees. “Over time, we will all be able to see great improvements with residents’ gardens’ yields and vegetable crops as well as the Wilson Botanic Park. A group of our residents is looking forward to their new hobby assisting the Rooftop Honey beekeepers as part of a village community project. Two of our residents, Paul Gubbels and Mathew Vander Horst, have prior bee keeping experience,” said the Manager. “The sweet reward for the residents of Berwick Brae is their share of the liquid gold at the end!” Royal Freemasons now joins Paris, London, Toronto, San Francisco, New York City and Melbourne where urban beekeeping is already thriving.
