IN THIS NEW SERIES OF PROFILES, WE SPEAK TO SOME OF OUR WONDERFUL EMPLOYEES TO SEE JUST WHAT MAKES THEM TICK. IN THIS FIRST STORY, WE ASKED MICHAEL LIM, MANAGER OF COPPIN CENTRE RESIDENTIAL AGED CARE ABOUT HOW HE FOUND HIS PASSION.
My first nursing job in Melbourne was at The Royal Melbourne Hospital, then I worked at numerous other hospitals and the RDNS. In 2006, I decided to try Aged Care nursing by working part time as a registered nurse. I soon realised that working in Aged Care is a very fulfilling job and I have been in the sector ever since. I started in a small 30-bed facility as a Director of Nursing, oversaw its expansion to 50 beds then took on the role as Manager. In February 2016, I went on to manage the 72-bed Gregory Lodge home and in November 2016, I became the Manager of Coppin Centre where we have close to 300 employees and 209 residents. In my role, I am responsible for the entire operations and to ensure that our occupancy is filled most of the time. This involves developing positive working relationships with referring groups such as hospitals, community agencies, social workers
and friends. I enjoy the challenges and diversity. There is no such thing as a ‘typical day’. I arrive as early as 7am to see the night staff and then walk around the site. This is one of the most rewarding times as I have the chance to talk with those working at the
home and with the residents. There’s so much to learn from the experiences of other people.
