You might not expect an aged care home to be pumping with music, but on a Thursday afternoon at Royal Freemasons Springtime in Sydenham, there’s a party in full swing.
Nostalgic hits from the 70s and 80s are brought to life by 2 of a Kind, a brother-sister duo made up of Peter and Chris, who volunteer their musical talents for the Springtime community.
Since their 95-year-old father, John, moved into the home earlier this year, Peter and Chris have come to know the residents and thought they might enjoy some musical entertainment.
“We just thought we’re happy to play if they’d like some music,” says Chris. “We practise every Thursday anyway, so why not? It gives us a chance to play, and it’s also nice for the residents and Dad.”
Having grown up in the Salvation Army, music has always been an important part of Peter and Chris’ life. They have played in various bands over the years, with 2 of a Kind being their latest musical endeavour.

The residents adore their concerts and some of them can’t help but dance to the familiar and much-loved tunes the duo plays.
Peter says, “As a performer, it really is the greatest compliment when people get up and dance around to the music.”
“Even though some of the residents have limited mobility, they can still enjoy the music,” adds Chris. “Because we play songs they know and that evoke fond memories.”

Some favourite songs include Reminiscing, Love is in the Air, Crocodile Rock and anything by ABBA.
“One resident said to me, ‘You have to bring ABBA’, and I said, ‘Well, I can’t bring ABBA, but we can play some of their songs!’” laughs Peter.
“When we played a couple of their songs, he just sat there and bawled the whole way through,” says Chris. “I saw a few of the residents having a weep. It makes me sad when they cry but at the same time it’s nice to know the songs we play bring back such deep memories for them.”
Peter and Chris love performing for the residents and get a great sense of reward from giving back to the Springtime community.
“Seeing the smiles on their faces while we’re performing is so great. They enjoy what we do so we are happy to keep playing for them,” says Peter. “For me, giving back is just part of my DNA, and I believe we should share our talents and help people out.”
