New memory support unit to open at Monash Gardens

Royal Freemasons will be opening a memory support unit (MSU) at their Monash Gardens home in Mulgrave in mid-September, responding to a growing need in the community to support people with dementia and cognitive impairment.

The sixteen-bed unit will be a specialised care space that will prioritise the mental and physical wellbeing of residents by creating a safe, familiar, and engaging environment.

The MSU will feature a secure dementia-friendly design with easy environmental navigation and a calming décor to reduce agitation, specialised care from staff who will be trained in dementia-specific approaches, equipped to manage complex care needs and engaging activities that stimulate memory, improve mood, and promote social interaction. There will also be an emphasis on routine and connection, with regular mealtimes, familiar faces and meaningful interactions.

The person-centred model of care to be employed in the unit will enable residents living with dementia and cognitive impairments to lead the very best life possible.
