“I NEVER MISSED A PRACTICE SINCE I’VE JOINED ROYAL FREEMASONS CHOIR. MY MOTHER WAS A RESIDENT BEFORE AND DIED MORE THAN A YEAR PAST, BUT I STILL LOOK FORWARD TO GOING TO CENTENNIAL LODGE AGED CARE EVERY TUESDAY AFTERNOON TO ATTEND THE CHOIR PRACTICE AS WELL AS VISITING FRIENDS AND THE WONDERFUL STAFF. IT BECAME MY OUTLET FOR DEPRESSION. SINGING HAPPENS TO BE THE HARMONIOUS THERAPY FOR MY MUM THAT’S WHY SHE REACHED THE AGE OF 100”, A CHOIR MEMBER TELLS US.
A group of people singing together, united by their love of music, creates a strong sense of community belonging. Plus, participation in a choir is scientifically proven to improve circulation, boost endorphins, help the immune system and reduce stress. “It accelerates bonding between us and we always have heaps of fun at the same time as we queue and create vocal grooves. We are free to sway, move and request a song we feel like singing – no restrictions. It feels great to share the good vibrations of singing in harmony with others,” says another chorister. Our ‘With One Voice Choir, Eastern’ will turn three years old in May. Every Tuesday afternoon for at least an hour at the Centennial Lodge lounge room, 18 residents and about ten staff and family members practice a playlist that includes Broadway musicals, inspirational and classical music, and popular tunes under the leadership of Daniel, a volunteer professional conductor from Creativity Australia.
Choir practice is open to all residents who would like to sing or just to listen. Jackie Maksic, Royal Freemasons Facility Leisure and Lifestyle Coordinator, welcomes all!
