Sunday, 11 November marked the 100th year Anniversary of Remembrance Day.
The City of Emerald celebrated the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day by covering the entire town in handmade crocheted poppies including the iconic Puffing Billy steam train– the very vehicle that local Emerald Soldiers took to the Melbourne ports on their journey to Gallipoli. The Emerald RSL Club asked for 10,000 poppies to cover the main engine of Puffing Billy.
The Emerald RSL was overwhelmed with the public’s response and received in excess of 45,000 from around Australia. Many were donated in memory of friends and family that represented Australia in times of war.
The Remembrance Day ceremony drew the largest crowds: young and old, and was celebrated with traditional costumes, the release of carrier pigeons, a parade of portraits of Emerald soldiers, aerial flyovers and the beautiful arrival of a representative single uniformed soldier in a single carriage pulled by the adorned Puffing Billy Engine.
We would like to recognise the Berwick Brae Village craft club who tirelessly knitted and crocheted a massive 207 poppies to donate for this Remembrance Day event.
